This book, while dealing with a very sensitive and heartbreaking time in our history, also tells of the kindness of human spirit and the hope for things to be better.  Have you seen either yet?  Describe and explain why you would/would not like to have lived in the time or place of the story.

This novel has a great deal to say about race relations in the South. How did the black and white communities interact in this story both within and beyond the borders of Whistle Stop? Much of what has affected Eddie happened during the war.  War is a time of great sacrifice.  What sacrifices have you made for someone?  What sacrifices have been made for you?  How did you benefit from those sacrifices?  You must write one complete, supported paragraph.

The quote, "That there are no random acts. That we are all connected. That you can no more separate one life from another than you can separate a breeze from the wind," to me means that, even though we don't realize it, we have an impact on the lives of everyone we come across. One of our little accidents could cause someone around us their life. On the contrary, something positive we do can also effect others in a good way for years to come.

We never learn where Ninny came from or how she came to be adopted by the Threadgoodes, only that they took her in and treated her like a member of the family. This is only one example in a novel full of non-traditional families. What are some other examples of familial bonds that do not look like a traditional nuclear family?
