Question 4 (FGT)
We never learn where Ninny came from or how she came to be adopted by the
Threadgoodes, only that they took her in and treated her like a member of the
family. This is only one example in a novel full of non-traditional families.
What are some other examples of familial bonds that do not look like a
traditional nuclear family? How does this author challenge and expand our
understanding of the meaning and structure of family? One paragraph answer, please.
Ruth and Idgie's relationship with each other has grown in to a love and companionship. Back than no one would dare be open about being in love with the same sex was just not right. They both live together and raise Buddy Jr., who is the highlight if their day. Idgie seems to be more butch and pushes to be more like a father to Buddy while Ruth is still a loving and caring mother. The girls are so opposite of each other which makes the combination of parenting even more unique. The girls and Buddy Jr. even treat Sispy and Big George as if they were family. They really don’t care that they are black. Back then it was uncommon to be so secure and loving toward another race.
ReplyDeleteIdgie and Ruth had became best friends because they both loved Buddy Threadgoode being in love with the same sex was just a no no back then because no one even dared to try it. The girls are opposite in their characteristics! When Ruth had Buddy Jr. The girls both raised him without a male romodel! the girls had help tho with Sispy at their side and Big George! They treated them as if they were family. They really don’t care that they are black, because they were raised around them. Back then it was weird to have black people in their family or treat them like family.
ReplyDeleteHow Ruth and Idgie acted as parents to Stump even though he was only Ruth's son. Idgie treated him as her own as well. Teh were the parent figures to him growning up becsue Frank was an abusive psycho who would have end up of killing stump as a kid or Ruth. Pretty much everyone who worked at the Cafe was in a family based terms because they're all so close to one another and got each others backs. Those close bonds formed on a family level making it a form of family to everyone. The author expanded the meaning of family by making it out of love and care not blood. Knowing this it made everyone in that town have a person who cared about them. No one was alone.
ReplyDeleteIdgie and Ruth were a non traditional family raising Buddy Jr. together. Ruth leaving her husband was also pretty uncommon in that time. They treat the blacks with respect and welcomed them. Sispy and Big George were part of the family and always around to help out.
ReplyDeleteidgie and ruths relationship started out slow. they only knew of eachother through buddy. once buddy died they got closer. as tyime pasted they became the best of friends. when ruth had buddy jr. it was only her and idgie raising him. the friends and family of those two helped them out also.
ReplyDeleteThe relationship between Ruth and Idgie was very abnormal back then. And to talk about a same sex relationship back then would have been a big NO. Everything would have been very hush hush. Though i'm sure there were suspisions, no one questioned anything. The way Idgie helped Ruth with Stump was nice. She had no parental ties to him but raised him as her own. She would most likely be the manly figure in his life. I'm sure, when Ruth passed, Idgie went on to care for stump like her own, just as she had always done.
ReplyDeleteIdgie and Ruth started out as a not so good relationship. Idie loved buddy and Idgie blamed ruth for his death. Later on when they were older, they began to like each other more and more, especially when they were trying to raise buddy jr.
ReplyDeleteidgie and ruths relationship was weird. at first they didnt like each other. then after all the har dhsuip the y becam best friendse and they even raisred a kid together unti l the day ruth died. then idgie raised ruths kid all by herslef. it show how much they cared for each other.
ReplyDeleteRuth and Idgie act like they are very close sisters even though they are not. When Buddy died it seemed like Idgie blamed Ruth, so Idgie tried to stay away from Ruth. After a while they then decided to be friends and they got really close. The way they take care of Buddy Jr. is great. It is like he has two moms.
ReplyDeleteRuth and Idgie are very close I think. They are almost like sisters. Also if Idgie was mad on Ruth because of buddy, are they becoming good friends!
