Assignment 2 FGT

Discuss the importance of food in the novel.  It almost is another character, it is used so often.  What do you think the author is trying to say by doing this?  Write a solid, 5 sentence paragraph to answer.  Then reply to at least 3 of your peers (with no less than 3 sentences each time).

  1. I think food is very important because it has to do with the restraunt. Everything in the town evolves around the cafe. Idgie and Ruth are a big part of the cafe and that's how their relationship started over food. Mrs. Couch also always has food when she's around. Everything is about food.

    2. I also agree the cafe is bringing people together. It's what keeps this story going. It also expresses the characters.

    4. This is true, especially with Mrs. Couch. She eats all the time, and perhaps this is her way with coping. People will "eat their feelings" so to speak, and maybe she is looking for something to distract her.

    5. I agree with you on how everything begins around food. Maybe the idea is that comfort is found in the food they make. Mrs. Couch is always looking towards food for comfort.

  2. I think the author wanted to make food a very important part of this novel because food is a very important part of life. It is the source of life. It brings families together around the table. It helps people with their emotions. Especially during the depression time period food was very important because it was so scarce.

    1. I agree Tracy, food is very important to people. Food is what gives people energy and could bring people together. Without food then there really isn't any connection.

    2. This is very true. People rather enjoy holidays like thanksgiving and Christmas because it gives them an opportunity to get together. Plus, food makes everyone comfortable and relaxed, therefore the people will enjoy each other's company more.

    4. I agree, food was very sacred during the depression. People looked forward to dinner time because that was all they had. All that mattered was staying healthy.

  3. In the book food is used a lot. I think food is used to represent people. When they go to the nursing home there's always food. I think people use food to deal with emotions. If there happy or ad they probably eat.

    3. This is why people have eating disorders. People associate food with feelings. When people feel a lack of sensation in an area, they replace it with something (usually food).

    4. Food is a really big deal in the book. That's how idgie and Ruth started talking. It's also how mrs. Couch and Mrs threadgood started talking.

  4. I think food is another character in the book. It is because it is significant because it controls the emotions of the characters. It also changes the actions of the characters, especially Mrs. Couch. I think it creates a good atmosphere. It is also an important part of life.

    3. Mrs Couch always has food when she goes to the nursing home. Whether it be candy or food from a fast food place. I also think food has helped her emotionally.

  5. Food is a huge issue in this novel. Mrs. Couch just loves food and it seems like its her insecurity. She uses food to cover up her depression. Whenever she's upset about something she just constantly eats. So because she's in the nursing home she eats constantly because she doesn't want to be there.

    1. Mrs. Couch is really emotional and she does use food to cope. I think food sort of becomes an addiction in her life. Even when she starts to feel better about herself she still eats.

    3. I agree Mrs. Threadgoode isn't happy being in the nursing home. To distract herself she just eats and eats but never opens up about how sad she is to Mrs. Couch. Food is a form of distraction for many people.

  6. The food in the story is important because it tells a little about the restaurant. It is also important in the story because it is important in real life. Its also important because it tells the price of their food back then. The author is saying that it is important to people in the story. The author is also saying that we can't live without food.

  7. I think the author is trying to get the point across that food is such an important element to this time period. If the cafe hadn't existed, a huge part of the town wouldn't exist. Everyone gets closer to one another as the cafe grows, and people's relationships with one another grow. Plus, the cafe offers an opportunity for people to get help during the tough times.

  8. The food mentioned in the book is always that of as some sort of safety. Mrs. Couch eats constantly because she feels bad for herself and eating distracts her from thinking about how much she hates her life. When they go to the cafe they always mention the fried green tomatoes because it was such a stable thing during the depression along with other food they sold. Mrs. Threadgoode accepts more and more food from mrs. Couch because I think she is beginning to worry she is never going home. I believe that the food is the symbolism of security in the book.

  9. I think food is very important in this book because the book is called "Fried Green Tomatoes at Whistle Stop Cafe". So obviously this book is going to revolve around a cafe, and green fried tomatoes are going to come into play at some point in time.
