Question 5 (FGT)
Women are
portrayed in so many different ways in the novel. Discuss two of the women in
the novel. One can be Iggy or Ruth, but not both. Tell me how they are
potrayed, what this means to the reader, how it challenges traditional roles of
women, and your opinion. Then you must reply to at least THREE of your
classmates' posts.
idgie isnt like the other women in the 30s. she was a tom girl. she didnt like to wear dresses and act like all the other woman in those days. evelyn is a woman by the books. she never did anything wrong to upset her husband. her life was revolved around pleasing her husband. then she kinda lost it.
ReplyDeleteI agree she is different then a lot of girls in her time.
DeleteYeah your response to this question was rather simple but it got the entire point across. I like that.
DeleteYou got to the point and had the same view as me.
Deletei agree she wads a manly woman
Deleteyou and me had the same thinking.
DeleteDeep down inside Evelyn is a strong and independent woman. She just needs to find herself first. She is trying her best to spice up her marriage, but her husband is oblivious to everything except work, food, beer, and sports. He doesn't give her the attention she deserves and that is really hurtful to Evelyn. She learns to cope by become an independent and bright individual such as Idgie. When Evelyn is told about Idgie's unique and outspoken perosnality it gives Evelyn that courage. Evelyn used to follow the old fashion role of women like have dinner ready for your husband when he gets home because wives don't matter that much unless the husband is in great need of something. Idgie on the other hand is a wild child. She doesn't care what people think and she will speak her mind. She isn't afraid to tell others whats up and that what I personally love about her. I hate that women need to have a so called "role" in life. Women should be able to do whatever they desire with no regrets.
ReplyDeleteI agree about both of them, I think Ed is just an inconsiderate jerk!
DeleteSadly a lot of things still today is surrounded by the women's role. People think just beacsue we're female they think they have right to judge but they don't
Deleteyeah i agree. ed got what he deserved.
Deletei think ed wasnt a good husband either. he never did anything in the interests of evelyn.
DeleteEd is a butthead, and that's putting things politely. He is definitly not a man. A man would not beat up his wife or any other smaller being.
DeleteEvelyn took control for herself and ed by the end so he got what was coming to him.
DeleteI agree. Ed was a jerk to her.
Deleteui agree she was agood person with a hard to please husband.
DeleteTheir mariage just wasn't right.
DeleteIdgie, with her short blonde hair, is a "tomboy" who falls in love with Ruth. Idgie is able to relate and communicate freely with everyone, and she tries to treat everyone as human beings. In the segregated society she lives in, those practices may get her in trouble, but she refuses to treat people any differently.
ReplyDeleteFrank Bennett is a man with an Oedipus complex. He adores his mother so much it riles his already abusive father. Everything changes for Frank when he comes home early from school to find his mother having sex with his uncle. Henceforth, he hates everyone. With inheritance and hard work, he prospers, but he also beats up, impregnates, and ruins many women in the area.
This is all sad but true...
DeleteI must have missed that part about Frank Bennett's life.
Deleteya i think i misssed this too?
DeleteIdgie was an odd woman for that time. She hung with guys. Went and played poker and drank. She was just kind of wild and free. Evelyn was a woman that followed the rules set for her. Didn't get into any trouble, was always good and made sure her husband was happy. After she meet Mrs. Threadgoode though she turns into the opposite and takes control of what she wants to do.
ReplyDeleteIdgie was a free spirit and it wasn't neccessarily natural in those times. She was the polar opposite of Evelyn.
Deletethats exactly what i thought about them
Deleteyeah thats pretty much all right. thats what i thought also.
DeleteEvelyn is your tipical kind of old fashioned women. She wears dresses, doesn't work, does the house work, cooks dinner for her man, and tries her best just to please her husband. In this book she plays the role of the woman figure but then totally looses it at the end due to her wanting happiness.
ReplyDeleteRuth was also the tipical woman she wore dresses and married the man she was supposed to and followed his every work. She basically had no say nor power in the relationship, which is how they liked it back then in the time period she was in. The didn't want women to have any power probably becaue we're awesome and stuff like that.
I agree Evelyn need to be a bit more spunky!
DeleteIdie was different than most women in the 30's. She did what guys do. She went out and drank with the men and also played poker with them too. Mrs. Threadgoode is a funny old women. She made people like Evelyn see the more important things in life and to live life to the fullest. She taught Evelyn that death isnt a scarry thing.
ReplyDeleteIdgie was insane. I like how in the movie, Mrs. Threadgoode is laid out to be Idgie. They are similar in ways and I had my suspisions a lot in the book, even though she is not supposed to be. The lessons she taught Evelyn were everlasting and I believe they changed each other for good.
Deleteidgie was a tom boy. she did all kinds of things that boys did. she even kinda fatherd a kid. they did alot of hard things to get through the times. ruth was the exact opposite.
ReplyDeleteiggie was more of a man than a girl. she liked to be out side and in a way was a tom boy.they kind of made her seem like the most important person. evelynn was the woman who had an eating problem. shye ate to feel better and seen her self as not good. she lived to make her husband happy and no matter how ghard she tried syhe cpould not make it happen.
ReplyDeletei dont understand how eating could help someone feel better.... maybe when ur hungry but just for fun is something ill never understand.
DeleteNinny was a crazy old bat. She had all these amazing stories of people she knew. Some were quite unbelievable. We meet her in the nursing home where she talks to random passerbys. And she talks a lot. Evelyn is this quiet, timid lady who is losing herself in the ever-changing world. She meets Ninny and finds tewanda or whatever and finally begins to become herslef. I think that they contrast well and add a great storyline. Both ladies help each other.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you describe Ninny and Evelyn and their friendship.
DeleteI would say that Ruth is really strong. She went through a lot in her life. First Buddy died, then she was in an abusive relationship, and had a baby who then lost his arm, to top it all off she got cancer and passed away. It is good she had so many good people behind her to support her.
ReplyDeleteidgie was was a tomboy and she knew what to say to guys to make bid more and is out side alot more. know how to live on her on own. then evelynn was this girl that didnt know how to fit in and tried to.
